The General Assembly named Prince William County after the second son of George II upon its incorporation in 1731. The area mostly consisted of tobacco plantations throughout the majority of the 18th century. The County maintained its agricultural roots well into the 20th century. Towards the end of the Great Depression and into the 40s, the area began to develop the suburban identity that its residents today are familiar with.
Continued military and federal activity in the area led to the U.S Department of Defense becoming one of the top employers in the county. Other top employers in the area include Walmart, Prince William County Government and the Prince William County Public School System. The school district is the second largest in the State of Virginia and ranks as one of the top 10 in the Washington D.C metro area. Parents in Prince William County also benefit from access to facilities within the Department of Defense Education Activity education system, which include Quantico Middle High School.
Families in Prince William County also benefit from having close access to museums like the National Museum of the Marine Corps, along with multiple state parks.
